Features & Benefits
Instant Migration
ShaoLin CogoFS is stackable, that means it works on top of other block-level file
systems such as ext2, ext3, xfs, jfs, reiserfs, and network-based filesystems like nfs and smbfs. Journaling is
supported together with jfs, Sgi xfs, Linux reiserfs, and ext3. Users can migrate to ShaoLin CogoFS instantly,
without even needing to unmount their existing filesystem. ShaoLin CogoFS supports mixing with existing non-compressed
files. Just stack it on top and it works. Ideal to upgrade your system with no down time or filesystem outage.
High-Performance Kypertec Compression Engine
ShaoLin's Kypertec compression engine works in the kernel space with state-of-the-art
memory management and CPU utilization. It fully utilizes multiple CPUs on SMP systems and is able to operate even in
extremely low memory situations. ShaoLin CogoFS outperforms any user-space compression tools, and not just by a few
percentage points. The kernel-space ShaoLin CogoFS delivers more than 200% of performance increase over other user-space
compression tools. It also guarantees data written to disk in low memory situations.
High Compression Ratio
ShaoLin's Kypertec compresses data as much as zip and gzip. With this high compression,
ShaoLin CogoFS significantly cuts down disk mechanical movements by reducing disk access to all compressed files,
resulting in reduced power consumption and extended disk drive life.
Reliable and Efficient
ShaoLin CogoFS reliably and efficiently compresses individual files. It uses individual
file compression on normal filesystems to free users from the risk of filesystem corruption common to the old
unreliable block compressed filesystems. At 0.15% data overhead, ShaoLin CogoFS is more efficient than many commonly
used compressed file formats while still providing random access and read/write to the compressed files.
Intelligent Selective Compression
ShaoLin CogoFS knows how to selectively compress your files. It will back-off from
compressing incompressible data. If blocks are detected as incompressible, ShaoLin CogoFS automatically stores them in
uncompressed form. Files can contain mixed compressed and non-compressed blocks, optimizing performance and
compression efficiency.
Cross Platform Design
ShaoLin CogoFS works on Linux, but there is no need to install it on the file server,
only the Linux client. If your network file server is some variant of UNIX, Windows NT, or even NAS, ShaoLin CogoFS
does not care, it just stacks on top of it.
