ShaoLin Volume Replicator is an software-based open solution, unlike other proprietary solutions which rely on special volume formats, proprietary volume managers, file system types or hardware. It provides a flexible solution to replicate existing data sets (volumes) of any file system types without modification. In addition, ShaoLin Volume Replicator replicates data between any storage hardware platform, across any standard IP network and over any distance. It utilizes existing infrastructure without the need of using any proprietary hardware, file systems or special volume managers, eliminating vendor-specific storage limitations.

Thanks to ShaoLin's unique high performance and kernel-based Kypertec Compression Engine, ShaoLin Volume Replicator makes efficient use of network resources and provides maximum performance by compressing data blocks for replication over long distances. This lowers network bandwidth requirement and enables higher throughput in a narrow bandwidth.  Resilient and Efficient Synchronization

Since ShaoLin Volume Replicator is a block level virtual volume device driver, it only replicates the data blocks that actually changes instead of the complete file or volume to keep network traffic to a minimum. In case of network outages and failures between the replicated sites, the changes of volume will be remembered and they will be resynchronized upon network reconnection. In the event of a migration from a primary to a secondary site, ShaoLin Volume Replicator provides rapid resynchronization that failover and failback can occur under all shutdown scenarios without resending entire data sets over the network.

ShaoLin Volume Replicator offers encryption capabilities for enhancing data security. Data can be encrypted in the volume and as well as in the replication stream. With encryption done in the data phrase, replication stream can be protected with using normal TCP/IP transmission and does not require high overhead VPN infrastructures. Remote replicated storage systems can be hosted in unmanned off-site area or anonymous data centers as backup sites which only receive encrypted data from the primary site.
